Walk for Walker

Linette Murphy is asking for your support at the Walk for Walker

Our daughter has a significant mental health disability which has meant years of hospitalizations and residential treatment even though she is only 11 years old. She has been on the residence at Walker for the past 16 months and in that time Walker staff has given her birthday parties, been the tooth fairy, read her bedtime stories, fed her dinner, the nurses who hold her hand during blood draws, the teachers who uniquely and individually educate her, the therapists who work with her to accomplish daily life skills, and supports for us as her parents and her brother. She started to be able to manage the stressors of daily life skills and is now transitioning back home, where she should be.

Many of the kids at Walker aren’t lucky enough to have families.

Their needs are so intense that their families can’t handle them, foster homes can’t handle them ad so Walker is their home. The money raised at the Walk/Run for Walker goes to funding the “extras” that make Walker a home for these kids. It buys the Dora the Explorer bike or the Batman poster, it pays for after school art classes, or various classes and field trips into the community. It’s hard to put into words what Walker means to our family, because the Walker School has given our family so much that there is no way I could ever repay them.

Walker provides intensive services for hundreds of the most troubled children, youth, and families.

The Walker array of programs and professionals provides state-of-the-art special education and world-class mental health services to children and adolescents, ages 3 to 22, in multidisciplinary programs at The Walker School and Beacon High School, and in public school systems through Walker Partnerships. A wide range of Walker support and outreach services extend these specialized therapeutic environments beyond our classrooms into family homes, public schools, and community settings.

With the help of the dedicated professionals at Walker, seriously troubled children, adolescents, and their struggling families are able to rediscover their strengths, develop new skills, and begin the work of rebuilding their lives.

I have created a First Giving donation page for my daughter at http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/sapphira-murphy/walkforwalker which talks a lot about how The Walker School has really impacted our family and helped our daughter.

The way to register is www.walkforwalker.org.  The race is this Sunday, September 29th and registration is at 9am.

I hope to see some Easton runners there!
